Legendary mountain man and Lewis and Clark expedition member John Colter was captured by the feared Blackfeet tribe in 1809 in Montana. Although his partner was pinned full of arrows, Colter was ordered to strip naked and then run by the Blackfeet warriors. The warriors after a short delay began to chase after him. Colter after covering significant ground felt a warrior close on his heels, with nothing but what he was born with he dealt with the threat. He then hid under a beaver damn. At nightfall he would start his journey of close to 200 miles to Fort Raymond, all while naked and exposed to the elements. Colter was hard as nails. Full story is worth a deep dive.

Phase I Tribute: 10km trail run

Phase II: The Revenant. Another legend of the frontier Hugh Glass was mauled by a Grizzly Bear and left for dead. He crawled and navigated by some estimates up to 300 miles to Fort Kiowa. This phase resembles a bear fight, because the more you fight for it, the more the bear fights back. Rep scheme resembles the estimated mileage Hugh traveled. Shouldn’t be too bad because we weren’t mauled by a bear. This story evolved into a major motion picture, although the real story is different in many ways. Highly encourage reading the book.

Phase II Tribute: 100 Renegade rows (25# Dumbells). 100 DB Thrusters (25-45# Dumbells). 100 Burpees.

Phase III: The Packout. All mountain men were no strangers to carrying a load on their back. John Colter was known for taking off into the wilderness with a 45# pack of essentials and not returning for weeks. Modern hunters are no stranger to this. Make a kill, next comes claiming your meat. The pack out can be arduous depending on terrain. Claim your kill. Earn your meat with the pack out.

Phase III Tribute: 5km ruck with 45#

Notes: Time this one from start to finish. If you are rucking on a treadmill then a minimum of 3 % incline. This one can be done anywhere, just 25 # DB’s, a ruck, and willpower.

Challenge 2

2 mile run (5 % incline) or on trails

800 m 90# sled pull

100 tire sledge hits

800 m 90# sled push

2 mile run (5 % incline) or on trails

Notes: Sub 45 # ruck for 1 mile instead of 2 mile run.
